Given the kinds of characters that were Hathaway’s bread and butter at first, she gained many fans early on. As Hathaway’s career continued on, and she began winning accolades, however, it seemed like the worm started to turn on her.
Looking back at how Hathaway became hated, it is clear that there wasn’t one factor that made many people grow to dislike her. Instead, there were several incidents where Hathaway came across as unlikable to many people for various reasons.
In 2013, Howard Stern was talking about Anne Hathaway when he was interviewing James Franco. During that discussion, Stern argued that the reason why some people hated Hathaway is that she seemed so performative when she won her own Oscar.
“Let me sum up why people hate Anne Hathaway; first all she gets a speechwriter to write her speech. She’s overly dramatic at these award shows. She’s always out of breath. She’s even acting when she’s winning an award.”

Looking back at how much many people used to badmouth Hathaway, it is a relief on some level that the backlash against her has calmed down. While it may be weird for people who’ve never met and certainly don’t know Hathaway to be relieved for her, there is a reason that makes sense.
In the Hollywood system, there are lots of stars who come across as just as performative as Hathaway once did. On top of that, if other stars who had bad performances got the hate that Hathaway got for co-hosting the Oscars, there would be almost nobody left in Hollywood.

When it comes to reports that Hathaway sent back food repeatedly, there are loads of celebrities that can be very demanding. A lot of the time when male stars get busted being demanding like that, fans just think they know what they want.
At the end of the day, it seems pretty obvious that the hatred that was directed at Hathaway seemed to be mostly unfounded. That is really too bad, especially since Hathaway told Harper’s Bazaar in 2014 that she lost roles due to the backlash against her.
“I had directors say to me, ‘I think you’re great. You’re perfect for this role, but I don’t know how audiences will accept you because of all this stuff, this baggage,'” Also in the same article, Hathaway revealed how it felt when she first discovered how some people felt about her.
“Punched in the gut. Shocked and slapped and embarrassed. Even now I can feel the shame. I was in crisis.”
Anne Hathaway Could Be Awful To People
Even though Anne Hathaway didn’t deserve the hate she used to receive, that doesn’t mean she is a perfect person. Nobody is. When Hathaway was interviewed by Glamour in 2018, she spoke about how she could be awful to people sometimes in the past.
As Hathaway explained in the interview, she would be very sweet and accommodating most of the time. However, when Hathaway let out her anger, she would unleash it on people.
“I used to do this thing where I was like, ‘I’m nice 29 days out of 30, and then I give myself complete permission to be a b***h to anyone, about anything.’ ” To Hathaway’s credit, she told Glamour that she had reflected on that behavior and she was changing.
“I realized that if I could actually move away from the judgment and deal with my emotions in the moment, I didn’t actually need the extra day. Rage doesn’t lead you to a place of peace. And for me, the goal is not happiness. The goal is peace.”
Later in the same interview, Hathaway spoke about how she was focusing on being true to herself instead of worrying about what the masses think. “I’m interested in living a very honest life. I don’t know if that makes me a boring person. I don’t really care if it does.”
Hathaway continued, “It would be easier if I was better at being misleading or sneaky. I know how all that stuff works. I’m not a naive idiot. I know if I was a little bit mean to everybody, people would be like, ‘Oh, she’s fun. I like her. Come have a drink.’ And I’m just like, ‘Can we have a drink and not try to tear each other apart?’”
