As production start nears for Superman: Legacy, DC Universe boss James Gunn offers an official update about casting after cracking down on rumors.
After cracking down on rumors, James Gunn finally breaks his silence and offers an official update on the casting for Superman: Legacy. As part of DC Universe’s revamp, the upcoming Superman-centered film will debut a brand-new Man of Steel, who will be prominently featured in the new universe moving forward. Written and directed by Gunn, fans have been eagerly anticipating the casting announcement for the film as Superman: Legacy‘s production start nears.
Months since he announced that he will be mum about Superman: Legacy‘s casting process, Gunn is now addressing the matter in a new interview with Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. Read his full quote below:
The DC Universe co-CEO shares that they have done a lot of auditions, but they are far from done. He also reminds the public that not all reports about the film are true, saying:
“Now that we’ve kind of done a lot of auditions, we’re narrowing it down. We’re not done yet. By the way — there’s a lot of stories out there about who we’re auditioning and all these screen tests. I’m just saying it’s not all true, that’s for sure… Journalists have to do what they have to do. That’s their job. They’re trying to get hits. They find out some things from agencies, but here’s the problem — is that they find out some things from agencies that might be true. They find out other things from agencies, which are agencies pushing their clients and trying to pump it up, like ‘I think my client is testing!’ There’s a lot of nonsense that comes out of it, and that’s difficult, because there’s people out there that are supposedly testing that aren’t, and that must be difficult for them as people. And there’s other people that might be testing… and I think it’s a private thing between me and them.”
When Will James Gunn’s DC Universe Announce The New Superman Actor?
According to the latest Superman: Legacy casting report, there are currently three actors that are still in the running for the role of DC Universe’s Clark Kent: Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet, and Tom Brittney. There are also three frontrunners to play Lois Lane: Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan, and Phoebe Dynevor. It’s worth noting, however, that the “test deals” are still in negotiations at this point.
Production for Superman: Legacy is not expected to start until next year, which means that Gunn and Warner Bros. have more than enough time to find the right Clark Kent and Lois Lane for the DC Universe. As Gunn said, there are still auditions to be done, which means that he isn’t rushing the process. But from a marketing standpoint, he has a couple of possible occasions to make the much-anticipated announcement. The first one is during DC Studios Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. Meanwhile, if DC FanDome returns this year, it could also be the perfect avenue to unveil the movie’s cast.
At this point, it’s for the best to just wait for Gunn’s official Superman: Legacy casting announcement. In any case, it shouldn’t be that long of a wait anymore, considering the movie’s nearing filming start. Following the trades for updates is okay, but fans should be careful not to be invested in any actor at this point in case they don’t make the project.
