Handre Pollard: ‘I do not know yet what I’m doing or where I’m going’

Springboks fly-half Handre Pollard is unsure about who he will be playing for next season with his contract expiring with Leicester Tigers.

The double Rugby World Cup-winning playmaker has been linked with a move away from Welford Road with reports suggesting that he could be off to Japan – a popular destination for South African players.

Handre Pollard unsure of his future

However, Pollard has revealed that right now, he is still unsure if he will leave Leicester Tigers or not.

“I have no idea,” the veteran Springbok told BBC Radio Leicester when asked where his future lies.

According to reports, Pollard could be off to Suntory Sungoliath in Japan where he would link up with Bok teammate Cheslin Kolbe. It is also reported that Leicester are planning for life without the Bok lining up Wales fly-half Sam Costelow as his replacement.

“I can tell you the truth, I do not know yet what I’m doing or where I’m going. I’m just happy being at Leicester and I will enjoy every minute I have here,” Pollard added.

He does hope that his contract situation is sorted out soon but added that he is currently not involved with the discussions as he has left that with his agent.

Pollard started his professional career in Pretoria with the Bulls and had a stint in Japan with the Red Hurricanes before signing for Montpellier after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

He arrived at Welford Road in 2022 and has racked up 38 appearances for the side since including four this season. He is set to return to action this week having returned from international duty helping the Springboks win the Rugby Championship and go unbeaten during the November international.

A happy Tigers’ squad

He is set to face off against several of his Springboks teammates with Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi and Ox Nche just three of the stars in the Sharks team that could feature in the Investec Champions Cup tie this weekend.

While Pollard is unsure of his future, he is keen to enjoy the season with Leicester after praising the impact former Wallabies boss Michael Cheika has had since joining the team.

“I’m really enjoying playing and all the boys, everyone, is enjoying it,” said Pollard. “And you can’t underestimate how important that is.

“We have to play hard and be on it every week, but the enjoyment element of it is so important in a rugby group in a long season like we have these days.”
