Bouncing Back Stronger: Woman Warrior and Purple Heart Recipient Overcomes Adversity to Live with Purpose

Danielle Green is a former Notre Dame women’s basketball player who made a significant impact both on and off the court. After her college career, she joined the U.S. Army and served as a sergeant in Iraq.

During her service in 2004, she was seriously injured in a rocket-propelled grenade attack, which resulted in the loss of her left arm. For her bravery and sacrifice, she was awarded the Purple Heart.

Following her military service, Green transitioned into a new career as a counselor, dedicating herself to helping fellow veterans. She works as a counselor for veterans, supporting them as they navigate the challenges of returning to civilian life.

In recognition of her courage, service, and dedication to her fellow veterans, Green was honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPY Awards in 2015. This award is given annually to an individual with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a way that echoes the legacy of Pat Tillman, a former NFL player who left his sports career to serve in the military and was 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ed in action in Afghanistan.
