9 Simple Garden Projects You Can Do Yourself to Help the Environment

Do-it-yourself garden projects

You’ve probably thought carefully about every plant in your garden, and now you want to focus on making your yard more inviting. Or maybe you need help organizing your gardening tools. From succulent wreaths to plank potting benches, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite garden projects. Now grab your gloves and get started.

1 Concrete table

Concrete tables are not only stylish, but they are also perfect for the elements. Sturdy and moisture-resistant, this do-it-yourself garden table has a solid cedar base and a tinted concrete top lasting for years.

2 Miniature Succulent Garden

Bring the desert into your garden in miniature form. To add whimsical charm to this little succulent garden, we’ve added an arbor, a chair, a cat, and a wheelbarrow, but feel free to use your own figures.

3 Tool-Cleaning Station

Put away dirty gardening tools, and you’ll find rusty shovels and spades in the spring. Replace broken tools (with Better Homes & Gardens Stainless Steel 2-Piece Garden Tool Set, $13, Walmart) and eliminate the hassle of an annual end-of-year cleanup with a bucket of sand and oil. This DIY tool-cleaning station requires only three ingredients and ensures clean tools without a full-on scrubbing.

4 Terrarium

No matter the season outside, we love terrariums for their ability to bring greenery to any indoor space. Create your own landscape to decorate a desk, use as a dining table centerpiece, or bring life to any space in your home.

5 Miniature Evergreen Garden

Mini cones and perennials create a perpetually green and beautiful miniature landscape. In this square garden, we used three conifers: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Tsukumo,’ Picea glauca ‘Jean’s Dilly,’ and a Valley Cushion Mugo pine. A dwarf heuchera perennial brings chartreuse color. When finished, cover the soil with gravel and sheet moss to keep moisture from evaporating quickly. Use Superthrive Vitamin Solution to keep your miniature garden healthy.

6 Concrete Paver Plant

Casting concrete is difficult. So why not skip that step and use pavers instead? With our easy tutorial, you’ll learn how to make inexpensive concrete planters that bring clean lines and modern style to your garden.

7 Outdoor Gardening Station

If you need a storage solution for your gardening tools, turn an old china cabinet into your outdoor station. Paint a secondhand piece a fun color (hint: use durable exterior paint), then tuck your tools, pots, and garden knickknacks inside the shelves and drawers. Decorate flat surfaces with beautiful tiles of your choice.

8 Bottle Bird Feeder

Bottle-feed your favorite winged friends. Instead of throwing away glass bottles, save them by making a simple bird feeder that you can decorate with a charm or bracelet that hangs from a copper wire. Fill it with safflower seeds or black oil sunflower seeds.

9 Living Succulent Picture

Bring living art into your interior with a framed succulent installation. This vertical garden requires very little water, making it an easy area to maintain, and because the succulents grow slowly, you won’t have to worry about your works of art becoming overgrown or unmanageable.
