All kids eventually realize that their actions directly impact those around them, but when they choose to use that power for good, it’s nothing short of incredible. For some, mowing the lawn is a meditative, enjoyable use of time. But when you have a disability or are simply overwhelmed with life’s demands, lawn care is yet another thing that needs to get done. 11-Year-old Julian La Pan saw an opportunity to help out around his community and he promptly seized it – now the pre-teen is changing lives, one lawn at a time.

When Julian and his mom stumbled upon a post from “Raising Men Lawn Care Service” challenging boys and girls to mow 50 yards for free, Julian immediately knew he’d complete the challenge. The 11-year-old wasn’t participating simply to win the advertised prize of new lawn care equipment – instead, he had his sights set on something money couldn’t buy.

“Some people just can’t get out there anymore. Their grass just gets too tall and I just like to do it,” Julian told WJBF. “I’m not just working for that stuff. I’m working to see people smile and I just like to see it. Every time I go home and I just remember what I did and I just remember and I have a really good day.”

Julian takes great satisfaction in a job well done, filled with pride that he’s able to provide such a helpful service to neighbors who need it. Julian’s own mom is a single mother, working long days to support her family. From a young age, Julian remembers seeing his exhausted mom mowing the lawn before he was old enough to help. He’s carried the drive to help people like his mom with him over the years, and now, he can.

In just over a month, Julian completed his goal of mowing 50 yards for free. His grateful neighbors surprised him with new lawn equipment, which Julian used to start his own lawn care business. At just 11 years old, Julian started Southern Bred Lawn Care. Though Julian now charges for his services, he’ll always make time to help someone in need, free of charge.
