There is a belief at Everton that Amadou Onana could surpass Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton think Amadou Onana could become as good as or even better than Moises Caicedo.
Chelsea were actually linked with the 22-year-old before they signed Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer.
During the January transfer window, The Telegraph claimed that Chelsea were interested in Onana and were even willing to offer Everton players on loan to sign him.
Onana had not even been at Goodison Park for a year yet, with Everton signing the Belgium international from Lille for £33m in the summer of 2022, as reported by BBC Sport.
Can Amadou Onana become as good as Moises Caicedo?
Everton’s belief that he can is really not that far-fetched. Onana, who is around the same age as Caicedo, has time to improve and really impressed in the Premier League last season.
According to WhoScored, the former Lille man made 2.2 tackles per game that campaign, the third-highest average in Sean Dyche’s squad.
Whether Onana can actually overtake Caicedo as a player remains to be seen, but he may very well possess the potential to become as influential as the Ecuadorian, who was excellent for Brighton last term.
WhoScored shows that his average for tackles per game was 2.7, which is quite high. It is probably not the only thing that separates them and Onana will surely have to do more if he is to earn a £100m-plus move himself one day.
