Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant is not enthused about his newest signature Nike sneakers.
In an era when people are brand-building as early as middle school, it is difficult to find a more honest athlete than Kevin Durant. The Phoenix Suns forward is just as lethal with his comebacks on social media as he is with a late-game pull-up jumper.
In addition to being ice cold on and off the court, Durant is also one of the most prominent figures in the basketball sneaker industry. Earlier this year, Durant signed a lifetime sneaker deal with Nike. But just because he is forever tied to the Swoosh, don’t expect Durant to turn into a company man now.
The Suns hosted their annual Media Day on Monday, and all eyes were on Durant’s size 18 feet. The perennial NBA All-Star debuted the ‘Ember Glow’ colorway of the Nike KD 16. When asked by a reporter about his newest kicks, Durant gave a dispassionate endorsement of his 16th signature sneaker.
In an Instagram video posted by @NBAKicks, Durant said, “It’s just another pair of kicks, man. It’s the 16th installment, so it’s nothing to call home about, brother. It is what it is, it’s KD’s. You just know they’re going to be on my feet every year.”
Ah, well, that is certainly an endorsement. As a sneaker reporter, it is disheartening to hear a signature athlete speak with such apathy about their signature model. Especially knowing that Durant is a legitimate sneakerhead who loves trying different kicks.
