For the longest time, the most powerful trick up DC’s sleeve was just being ignored, but Gunn and Safran are going to finally start using it in the war against Marvel.
There’s some properly exciting news for all the DC fans out there: after long years of being second after Marvel when it comes to the big screens, the tides are turning! DC’s biggest advantage over Marvel which has been continuously ignored by the studio’s previous heads will finally be put to good use, and changes are coming.
For as long as we remember ourselves, DC and Marvel have been the two biggest players in the superhero genre — and rivals on the market. Both studios have a plethora of projects, but only one playfield matters these days: the big screens. And unfortunately, DC has always been lagging behind, save for a few exceptions.
Marvel makes brilliant movies. Some are better, some are worse, true; however, there’s no point in denying that Marvel’s cinematic universe is adored by millions of fans all over the world, and you can’t say “theaters” without saying “Marvel.” Those guys just know what’s up, and they’ve been utilizing this strength of theirs for years.
DC, on the other hand, has always been lacking in the movie department. Aside from a few gems like Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy or Zach Snyder’s Justice League, the vast majority of the studio’s movies were just…not the greatest. And, unlike Marvel, DC wasn’t using its strongest hand, which is not live-action films.
Instead, DC makes phenomenal animated movies, and it always has been. Despite their immense popularity and acclaim, they never made it to the big screens, though, allowing Marvel’s live-actions to completely dominate that field. This changes with the new DC co-heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran.
James Gunn promised that in his new DCU, animated movies will be part of the franchise’s continuity to the point where the live-action actors will be voicing their characters in the animated adaptations, too, allowing for a consequent and coherent narrative throughout both mediums. Better yet, those animations will hit theaters, too!
This is a massive game-changer for DC and the only right way to go about it. For so long, DC’s biggest strength was left ignored, and now, it will finally be put to good use. Expect new DCU animated movies on the big screens soon, and be sure to grab enough popcorn to make up for all the missed ones!
