James Gunn’s SUPERMAN: LEGACY Will Skip Clark Kent’s Childhood Origin

James Gunn has offered up some new insight on his upcoming DC Studios film Superman: Legacy. He recently revealed on social media that his film will not include Cark Kent’s 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥hood origin story. When asked if he would be adapting All-Star Superman comics’ opening pages, he explained on his Bluesky account: “I think we’ve seen his origin enough in film at this time!”

Then a young fan volunteered to play a young version of Superman on Instagram, and Gunn replied that there would be “no Young Clark” in the film. The filmmaker also revealed that he and the composer have already started developing the score for the new Superman theme.

I’m fine with Gunn skipping out on Superman’s origin story, it makes sense to skip it. The movie will introduce a new version of Superman, who will be played by David Corenswet and it will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Corenswet will be joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Gunn is currently looking to fill the rest of the cast to take on characters like Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, and and members of a superhero team The Authority. The story will involve “Superman joining a world in which superheroes already exist.”

What are your thoughts on Gunn skipping Superman’s origin story?

Superman: Legacy will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s expected to begin in early 2024, just on track for its currently scheduled theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
