A Young African American Girl Named A’myri Phillips Breaks Record At US High School, Becomes First-ever Black Best-graduating Student

A young African American girl named A’myri Phillips has made history as the first-ever black salutatorian of Dekaney High School in the United States.

A’myri Phillips, a Texas teen graduated from Dekaney high school as the second-best graduating student in her class. She was awarded the overall salutatorian of the high school

Giving a speech at the graduation ceremony, Phillips said she was nothing but proud to be the first in her family to attend college.

“I stand before you as a proud African-American woman who will be the first in my family to go to college, who has overcome many obstacles to be standing here today,” Phillips said.

She went further to  highlight some of the struggles that black student face in the States as a community.

“I want to acknowledge the struggles many of us have faced as black students. From being underestimated and overlooked, to facing racial discrimination and microaggressions, we have had to navigate a system that was not always that was not always designed for our success,’’ she added.

Though she faced challenges as a black student, Philips said she’s glad she persevered and did not allow the color discrimination to bring her down.
