LeBron James makes LA Lakers history but still trails legendary Kobe Bryant for record that may never be touched

LeBron James made more history on Monday night.

The Los Angeles Lakers star nailed a shot from behind the arc in the first half against the Detroit Pistons to move ahead of five-time NBA Champion Derek Fisher to second on the team’s all-time three-pointers list.

He has now made 847 triples for the Lakers in six seasons with the team.

The only player left for James to pass on the list is the legendary Kobe Bryant – but his record may be one that is never touched.

Bryant drilled an incredible 1,827 three-point shots during his Lakers career, nearly 1,000 more than James as of Monday night (December 23).

Fisher (846 threes), Nick Van Exel (750) and Byron Scott (595) make up the top five behind Kobe and LeBron.

Securing second place on the list is no small feat, and Los Angeles were quick to celebrate the 39-year-old’s effort on social media.

“King lets it reign, LeBron secures his spot at second place for made threes in Lakers history,” the team wrote, sharing a graphic on X.

Many fans also took a moment to congratulate James, who continues to hit milestones late in his career.

“With all the stars LA has had this surprises me,” one person wrote.

“LeBron continues to make history,” another said.

“Reminder that he started his Lakers career at year 16,” a third added.

While James had 28 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in the 120th triple-double of his career on Monday night, the Lakers were beaten by the Pistons in a tight game.

Detroit held off LA 117-114 to sweep the season series, having also won November’s match up.

The loss means the Lakers now have a record of 16-13 this season, and sit seventh in the Western Conference.

They will be hoping to bounce back against the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day, where James will come up against a fellow legend in Stephen Curry.

Ahead of the game, LeBron admitted that he doesn’t know how many more opportunities he will have to face the Warriors star.

“Any time you get an opportunity to be on the court and compete vs one of the greatest to ever play this game, you don’t take it for granted,” he told reporters.

“I don’t know how many more opportunities will get to go against each other, so it’s always fun.”

The Warriors are 15-13 this season, and lost to the Indiana Pacers on Monday night.
