43-year-old Man Achieves University Degree After 24 Years as a School Janitor, Now Set to Become a Teacher

In the quiet halls of Hightower Elementary School in DeKalb County, Georgia, Tylan Bailey spent 23 years diligently working as a custodian. Little did anyone know that beneath the janitor’s uniform was a man fueled by a dream that would challenge the conventional narrative of success.

The Unlikely Journey BeginsAt the age of 40, Tylan embarked on a journey many deemed improbable — he enrolled at Georgia State University, determined to earn a degree in Health and Physical Education. His aspiration was not just to graduate but to become a teacher, an ambition that had long lingered in the corridors of his heart.

Overcoming the OddsTylan’s path to academic success was far from ordinary. Growing up in the Tobie Grant housing project in Decatur, Georgia, he faced adversity from a young age. His mother, grappling with addiction, moved the family across multiple states, exposing Tylan to a turbulent 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥hood marked by constant relocation and instability.

Despite the challenges, Tylan’s mother instilled in him the importance of education. Through various living arrangements and a patchwork of schools, he persevered. “Kids bring guns. There’s a fight every day. And you’re waiting on your turn to fight,” he recollects, describing the volatile environment of some of the schools he attended.

A Father’s PromiseTylan’s life took a pivotal turn when, at the age of 19, he learned he was going to be a father. Determined to provide a stable life for his daughter Yazmine, he prioritized education and graduated high school a year later. Working as an elementary school custodian, he navigated the challenges of parenthood, even taking on a second job delivering newspapers to support his family.

The Journey to TeacherhoodYet, Tylan’s aspirations didn’t stop there. His deep-seated desire to become a teacher lingered, prompting him to return to college at Georgia State University in 2017. Balancing full-time custodial work, fatherhood, and academics, he steadily progressed towards his dream.

An Unexpected SpotlightTylan’s remarkable journey gained national attention when a friend shared his story with the media. Featured on Channel 2, The Washington Post, “CBS Evening News,” and “Good Morning America,” his story resonated with thousands. The unexpected highlight was an invitation to the premiere of “Jungle Cruise” in Los Angeles, where he walked the red carpet alongside stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Embracing the Role of TeacherIn July 2021, Tylan Bailey, at 43, stood among Georgia State University’s graduating class, having achieved his dream of becoming a teacher. His contagious enthusiasm, coupled with a deep commitment to education, led to a job offer at Briar Vista Elementary School in Atlanta. He now imparts knowledge, coaches, and teaches physical education to students in grades pre-K through 5th, aiming to instill a lifelong passion for physical activity.

Inspiring the CommunityTylan’s journey resonated beyond the academic realm. Teachers and staff at Hightower Elementary, where he served as head custodian, recognized him as a role model. His story became a source of inspiration not just for his family but for the broader community.

The Legacy ContinuesTylan’s story serves as a testament to resilience, determination, and the pursuit of one’s dreams, regardless of age or circumstance. As he embraces his role as an educator, Tylan Bailey continues to motivate others to reach for their aspirations, proving that it’s never too late to rewrite one’s narrative.
