Chelsea have been given a huge boost to their hopes of signing Moises Caicedo thanks to a complex sell-on clause which was written into Tino Livramento’s contract at Southampton. The 21-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer, but the Blues have been haggling over his price tag.

football.london understands that Chelsea have already had three bids for Caicedo rejected and they’re expected to table a fourth in the coming days. Brighton are determined to keep the Ecuador international unless their £100million valuation is met, but the west Londoners remain confident that they can secure his signature.

While Chelsea continue to negotiate a fee with the Seagulls, football.london understands that Caicedo has verbally agreed personal terms over a potential transfer – but nothing has been signed yet. It’s believed that Mauricio Pochettino wants to welcome the youngster to Cobham before the start of the new Premier League season, which kicks-off this weekend.

So, the Blues must be prepared to submit their biggest offer yet if they wish to see the Ecuadorian feature against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on August 13. After raking in over £200million in player sales this summer, Chelsea are not short of funds but their latest cash injection will certainly supplement their next bid for Caicedo.

Livramento has completed a transfer from Southampton to Newcastle United, meaning the west Londoners could be granted more than £10million. According to football.london’s sister title HampshireLive, the Saints could receive around £40million from Eddie Howe’s side for the 20-year-old right-back thanks to performance-based add-ons.

The report states that a complex sell-on clause was inserted into Livramento’s contract when Southampton signed him from the Blues in 2021. A clause which would see Chelsea receive around 40% of any profit the Saints make from a future sale.

HampshireLive add that the amount which the west Londoners are owed increases depending on how much profit is made. It’s said that based on a profit of £28million from an initial £32million fee, Chelsea are set to bank around £11.2million.

Southampton, however, will rake in around £20million plus add-ons from the deal. While £11.2million may not seem like much in the current market, it could prove to be the difference between whether the Blues sign Caicedo or not.

Chelsea have faced plenty of criticism over the years for the sales of academy graduates but, so long as they continue inserting clever clauses into future contracts, they’ll continue to reap the rewards of the hard work being done at Cobham training ground.
