In an official statement, he told The Guardian: “There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game.

“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together.

“Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

The couple were seen together just hours after McIlroy’s heartbreaking US Open loss.

McIlroy came agonisingly close to ending his 10-year wait for a major title at the weekend.

He was on track to win the US Open but carded three bogeys with five holes left to play to squander a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau.

The Northern Irish golf star watched on in despair as his rival went on to win the competition.

He then left Pinehurst Resort immediately, missing the final ceremony.

DeChambeau expressed sympathy towards McIlroy after winning the title and said: “For him to miss that putt, I’d never wish it on anybody.

“Rory will win multiple more major championships. There’s no doubt. I think that fire in him is going to continue to grow.”
