93-year-old woman gets rewarded for working as a teacher for 68 years, does not plan to retire

A 93-year-old woman, Everlene Davis from North Carolina was honored in the United States after working as a teacher for 84 straight years.

Davis, from North Carolina, started working as a teacher in 1956 and ever since then, she has not changed career. She is currently a teacher of family and consumer sciences at South Columbus High School, Tabor City in the United States.

She told Wwaytv that she initially started teaching at Douglass High School during segregation and when the schools were integrated, she relocated to Tabor City High School and was there before she transferred to South Columbus High School.

Davis said she has taught a variety of students in a variety of circumstances as the world has changed around her. However all of her teaching experience has been in Tabor City.

“I’m familiar most of the time with the parents, their grandparents, and sometimes the great grandparents,” she said. She mentioned that teaching this long is not her job but her passion.

Davis said she takes pride in educating 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren to become successful adults. “I am so happy to know that I taught something in my class, you learned something in my class, that has contributed to the success of your job. That means a lot to me. Very much so, very much so,” she said.

Davis said she roots for all 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren who have sat at a desk of hers. Despite her age,  she still knows how to command and manage a classroom. “If students plan to pass this course, they have to work! And I work them hard. I guess it’s a result of the way I was trained,” she said.

Davis stated that when people discover she is a teacher, they often ask her age and she usually has a ready-made answer for them. “I tell them I am a very seasoned senior citizen in education as well as in other areas,” she said.

She has been honored with the County Teacher of the Year award thrice and has been nominated for the award for the year 2024.  She mentioned that as long as her health allows it, she will continue to live out her passion as a teacher.

In addition to holding the title of the state’s longest-serving educator, Davis actively participates in church and civic activities within her community. She is also a member of the Brunswick Town Council in North Carolina, demonstrating her activeness in community service beyond her teaching career.
