Tiger Woods makes major announcement after successful return to PGA Tour

Tiger Woods has announced the four majors will be on the cards in 2023 after a strong return to the PGA Tour last week at the Genesis Invitational, but admitted his body is still limiting him from bolstering his schedule. The 47-year-old returned to the PGA Tour for the first time since The Open last year, which also marked the first time Woods had played 72 holes since The Masters in April.

Woods’ highly-anticipated return saw him score 69, 74 and 67 before closing with a two-over 73 to finish one under par at the Riviera Country Club. He also played the Pro-Am before the four days of golf.

The golf icon was in the spotlight all week, as Woods continues to recover from a life-threatening car accident, which also included a prank towards Justin Thomas that sparked backlash. And in a huge announcement for golf fans in 2023, Woods said he would aim to play all four majors.

However, Woods admitted he didn’t know the next tournament he would complete in before the majors. “Competitively, I don’t know,” Woods said of his schedule.

“My goal each and every year from here going forward is to play in all the majors. I’m not going to play too much more than that. My body – my leg, and my back – just won’t allow me to play much more than that any more.

“That was my goal last year, and I was able to play three of the four. This year hopefully I can play all four. That is going to be my schedule going forward, because of all the limitations I have.”

The next major, The Masters, start April 1. However, Woods hasn’t declared if he will play a lead-up tournament next month.

Tiger Woods confident after Genesis Invitational hit

Woods played some excellent golf upon his return. However, the 47—year-old still missed the cut at the tournament he has played the most without a win.

“Unfortunately, my streak still continues,” Woods said after the tournament. Regardless, in an interview with CBS, Woods was more confident in his game after the 72 holes.

“My game is fine,” Woods said. “Yeah, it is rusty, I made some silly mistakes here and there. I didn’t quite pick up the speed of the greens each and every day fast enough – like I normally would if I was playing – but overall, I feel like I hit the ball like I have been hitting it at home.

“Now I just happened to bring it out here where I had to walk from point A to point B, and that was always the difficulty of it. I’m just so thankful for all my team for getting me ready each and every night, and morning, and at least giving myself a chance to go out there and play – and I was able to do it.”

In another big story at the Riviera Country Club, Jon Rahm returned to World No.1 after winning theGenesis Invitational with a performance that left no doubt who’s playing the best golf.

Caught in a battle with hometown favourite Max Homa at Riviera, Rahm delivered two big moments on Sunday with a 45-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-3 14th and then a tee shot to two feet for birdie on the par-3 16th. He closed with a two-under 69 for a two-shot win over Homa.

“Pretty incredible,” Rahm said. “(To win) at a golf course with this legacy, this history and hosted by Tiger Woods, is such an honour.”
