Mike Trout Responds to Former Angels Teammate Shohei Ohtani’s Surprise Marriage Announcement

Former Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani shocked the world this week when he announced on his Instagram late Wednesday night that he was a married man.

“Not only have I began a new chapter in my career with the Dodgers but I also have began a new life with someone from my Native country of Japan who is very special to me and I wanted everyone to know I am now married .”

The announcement came as a surprise to just about everyone, including his longtime teammate and close friend in Anaheim, Mike Trout.

“I think everybody was surprised,” Trout said. “I didn’t know he had a girlfriend.”

Trout offered his congratulations to Ohtani and said he was happy for him. He also commented on Ohtani’s Instagram post where he made the announcement, saying “Happy for you brother.”

Trout and Ohtani grew very close over their six years together in Anaheim.

When Trout got to Angels camp a few weeks ago, he said he wasn’t surprised Ohtani left in the offseason, and had a “gut feeling” that he was going to sign elsewhere.

The Angels head to Dodger Stadium on June 21-22 for the teams’ first regular season matchup of the year. But Trout will get a chance to congratulate Ohtani in person during the annual Freeway Series that takes place right before the regular season from March 24-26. He also may get the opportunity on March 5, when the Angels and Dodgers face off at Camelback Ranch — but that’ll depend on who’s in the lineup that day.
